Field Day and Field Trips

To prepare for their field trip to the zoo, Maddie & Will each did a report for the class.  Maddie chose the Fennec Fox while Will chose the Eagle.  They did amazing work - esp for 1st grade!!
The last day of school, Maddie & Will's class took a field trip to the Family Museum.  Here we are, ready to roll!
After playing at the museum for a few hours, we headed back to school for lunch and field day.

The End of Elementary School for Katie

It is with great sadness and a heavy heart that I add this blog post.  Katie is wrapping up her final weeks at Roosevelt and will start at Wilson Middle School next fall.  It is so hard to believe that my  little girl who "just" started 1st grade at Roosevelt is now done with elementary school!

The school had lots of fun activities planned for their 5th graders.  There are also lots of things coming to an end this month.

Katie got to enjoy a fun day at BizTown - a hands on experience for kids to show them the "real life business world".  She got to be a banker for the day.

Then there was the 5th grade picnic.  This year, they went to Camp Abe Lincoln for a fun filled day.  The kids played GaGa Ball, canoed and learned how to shoot a bow & arrow.  Here is Katie saying hello to one of the camp's horses.

That same week, the school district held the Academic Challenge.  Roosevelt took two teams to compete...Katie was one of the members.  Their team did amazing and only lost one round by mere points!

5th Grade Recognition - Katie looked so grown up!  We had fun looking through pictures to include in her poster.  We were all impressed with her poem.  I only shed a few tears...

Katie Turns 11!

We celebrated Katie's birthday - #11 - this week!  We had a very warm day for the middle of May, but we all enjoyed our time together.  Katie still has a love/thirst for books.  So, for her birthday, she received LOTS of books.  She was able to complete a few more of her American Girl book series.

Boy Scout Activities

Some Boy Scout activities included a campout and an astronomy lesson.  During the campout, Will received his "God & Me" pin.  He and Matt worked very long and hard to earn this pin.  He was the only boy to receive this honor!

Katie as Princess Diana

The big class project for the 5th graders is the Wax Museum.  Katie was very excited to be "Laura Ingalls Wilder", but when she went to sign up, Laura was already taken.  A few days earlier, we had discussed back up plans and had decided on Amelia Earhart and Princess Diana.  Unfortunately, her second choice was taken too!  So, her least favorite choice ended up being her character!  She really didn't want to be Princess Diana (I think I wanted it more than she did!!).  However, after watching a few videos and finding some books, we were able to get her excited about portraying Princess Di.

We shopped for the perfect dress - something simple and elegant.  I gave a shout out on Facebook and a friend supplied some wonderful jewelry!  We found a clutch and cute shoes.  All that was missing was the crown.  We hit every Goodwill and store possible with no luck!  I really didn't want to spend any money on the outfit - knowing it would end up back at Goodwill soon!  I then remembered my cousin Tammy's "Miss Iowa" crown.  After calling my aunt to get permission to use the crown, we had all of the girls try it on.  They were in heaven!!
We tried it on Katie and quickly realized that it wasn't going to work for a day long event.  We needed something without bobby pins!!  I scored a dress up tiara at the Target Dollar Spot!  It all worked really well.  Katie memorized her "speech" and did an awesome job!  With the exception of the speech (which we only helped widdle down to the appropriate time allotted), she did everything herself! She was rewarded for her efforts with high praise all day...and a A+ grade!
