The Twins turn 9!

9 years - the twins have been with us for 9 years!  This year to celebrate, they asked if we could go to Chuck E Cheese. Their birthday happened to fall on Martin Luther King Jr Day this year which meant NO SCHOOL!  They were pretty excited that their birthday was a no school day!

We planned their birthday party for their actual birthday...hoping that Chuck E Cheese wouldn't be quite as busy as a weekend.  It wasn't too bad, and we were able to let the kids go off on their own and play games with their tokens, allowing us adults to sit and chat.

Will chose a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Cookie while Maddie chose a Barbie cake.
Alex enjoyed playing Deal or No Deal
But the favorite by far was the roller coaster ride!
Maddie - turning in her million tickets for a tootsie roll...
Ready to sing "Happy Birthday", eat Cookies & Cake and open presents.
Maddie reading her personalized birthday card from us.
Opening her American Girl Doll Outfit
Will LOVES Lego Chima.  The Chima Lion Temple was normally $120.  Becki found it on clearance at Target for $60!!  She asked Will a few times (leading up to his birthday) if he would prefer the Lion Temple or another Lego set.  His answer was always the Lion Temple but "it is too much money for you to spend Mom!".  You can imagine the pure joy when he opened the Lego set from us & Becki's parents.  The box was as tall as him!
He also received a Lego Chima alarm clock (above lower left corner). He was so excited to use it and it woke him up for the remainder of the school week!  He was up, dressed and ready to go (literally...he had his coat on and backpack on his back) by 6:45 each day!
We snapped a picture of all 7 kids before heading back home.  It was a fun day with lots of playing, eating and laughing.  The twins talked us in to hitting Toys R Us and Barnes & Noble on the way home so they could spend their money from Grandma & Grandpa Hart and Great Grandma Phyllis. More Legos!

This next year will be double digits for the twins and teens for Kaitee.  We continue to reach milestones and say goodbye to the "kid" years.  I love that they are growing up...but there are moments that I miss my babies.

Happy Birthday Twinsies - Praying that #9 is an amazing year for you both!!!

Keeping it Real Folks!

I am doing this more for myself than anything.  I have been wanting to blog the funny & sweet things that the kids say/do.  Most of the time Matt & I post them on Facebook but they don't get carried over to the blog...where it would be easier to find down the road!  So, I am going to go back through our FB walls and add some cute things from the kids.

8/8/09 - quote of the day is from Katie - 7 years (after repeatedly pulling her underwear out of her butt). "I am having an unlucky underwear day!"

8/18/09 - sorry Matt - your chapstick is gone...on a good note, the twins will not have chapped lips or cheeks for a few days!

9/28/09 - little eyes are always watching! Tagged a bunch of garage sale stuff this morning (including putting things into ziploc bags)...Maddie disappeared for a while...came back with all of her summer clothes in ziploc bags!

10/21/09 - thinks we've eaten out too much lately...tonight I said "we don't know what its like to eat at home any more" and Alex said, "yes we do mommy, we go through the drive through and take it home."

11/3/09 - should know that a closed door (with a twin on the other side) is not a good thing. Just opened the door on Will and found 4 of the brand new fruit snack packages opened and empty

11/6/09 - asked Alex what she should do if I fall from the ladder & can't talk to her (while I was cleaning out the gutters). I hoped/expected her answer to be "call 911"...instead she said, "I'll catch the ladder, Mom"

12/4/09 - amazed by my 3 yr old...he played the claw game by himself and won a bear!!! Yes, the bear is ugly!

12/7/09 - Katie (7) just told me..."when I grow up and get fired from Chick-Fil-A, I will start working at Fazolis...because I really like their food too"...

12/24/09 - Will was walking around before bed giving out his trucks to the girls & saying "ho, ho, ho...Merry Christmas"...in his little 3 yr old voice!

4/23/10 - Katie's prayer tonight, "I love Maddie, Will & Alex, I love Mommy because she gives consequences good and I love Daddy because he goes to work so we can have things"

8/8/10 - while picking up the basement, I asked Will (4) if the underwear on the floor was clean or dirty...his response..."here, let me smell them"!

12/12/10 - thanks to the new Hallmark Christmas Vacation Ornament, my kids recognize the Hallelujah chorus - Will's (4) been singing it all morning!

12/28/10 - I think the kids have watched Despicable Me a few times...Katie just banished Will to the box of shame...

12/14/10 - listening to Maddie & Will play dollhouse...she finishes everything she says to him with "honey"...ironically, Matt & I don't say that to each other!!

12/27/11 - went through Will's jammies today and told him that his Superman jammies are too small for him. His poor little heart broke and he sobbed! I guess I'll be on the lookout for new superman jammies. He told me if I find some, to get a size 10 (he's size 5/6) so he can wear them for a long, long time.

12/1/11 - Maddie was going through her "popcorn" words when we came to "but"...Her response, "bottom".

11/15/11 - The other night Katie & I discussed honesty. The next night we went out to eat. She received 6 chicken nuggets instead of the 4 that were ordered. I asked her what she thought she should do...she got up and went to tell the cashier that they had given her too many. I love her heart! Of course, they told her it was their mistake and okay to keep them.

10/21/11 - Katie cut out a mini magazine from her American Girl magazine yesterday. She excitedly told me last night that Pollyanna and Katherine (her AG dolls) would now have something to read while they were in the bathroom.

10/21/11 - At conferences yesterday, we got a bunch of old school papers from the kids. One of the papers that Alex wrote was about summer vacation...she had a great summer - she made up everything on the paper!! Remember that she is 7!!! Evidently the things we DID do this summer wasn't up to par for her!  she went golfing and "made it in the hole", rode bikes at church with her friends, went to Camp Harvest (katie did), went to a hotel with grammy (and swam)..."My summer vacation was fun!".

8/4/11 - From my sister Teri's wall...
Conversation from the backseat today...
Judah (to his cousin Will): Will, have you ever been bathtized?
Will: I don't know what that is.
Judah: It's when people push you under water and you come back up....
Will: Oh, I never been bathtized.
Judah: I've never been bathtized either.
So cute.

12/19/12 - waking up Maddie (6) this morning, she was still half asleep and said, "spell Police for me Mom"..."I really need to know!". I spelled it for her and asked why she needed to know...then she looked at me like I had two heads! Love my sleepy babies!

12/8/12 - Will was looking at our big mural painting over our bed this morning. It was hand painted by Kari! He finally looked at me, confused, and said, "Did Kari mean to color outside the lines?"

11/29/12 - While driving through a nice neighborhood, with HUGE houses, Katie told me "Mom, when I grow up, I am going to own a big house....one with a bedroom for everyone. Then, you know, I won't have to share a room with my spouse. Don't you ever wish you had your own room mom?"

11/16/12 - From Katie's science test;

Q. A scientist is studying a rough fur guinea pig. What could be true about the fur traits of the guinea pig's parents?
A. One could have smooth, the other rough, they both could have smooth fur, or they could both have rough fur. It's either that, or then I have no clue. But I'm sure that I'm right, then.

11/10/12 - Will was sitting on Matt's lap this morning when Matt's cell phone (in his pocket) started to vibrate. Will jumped off Matt's lap and announced, "I never knew Daddy had a bottom shaker!"

10/14/12 - Found this To Do List by the computer (made by Maddie, 6):
to Do liist
Do the lodree (laundry?)
vakumee (vacuum?)...
poop on the toolit

10/1/12 - While helping Katie (10) with her homework, she innocently asked me, "Mom, were there pens around when you were a kid?"

9/22/12 - After a very LONG week with Will (you name it, he's probably tried to do it!), he told me this afternoon that he doesn't want daddy (Matt) to come home (he's been gone since Monday), because, "I've had a lot of fun with you, Mom!"...I don't know if that is a compliment or if he's telling me that he's been pushing my buttons because it is fun!

9/15/12 - Just overhead:
Alex to twins: Stop arguing...you're twins...you're SUPPOSED to get along!

7/16/12 - Conversation between Will (6) & Maddie (6).

Will: I accidently hurt the leg of that fly.
Maddie: oh no, he won't fly again!
Will: I didn't hurt his wing! Just his leg. I took him to the hospital and now he has a wheelchair. He'll be okay.

if he's not taking insects to hospitals, he's watching something on his "invisible tv" in his room. He definitely has an imagination!

7/14/12 - Alex (8) to Will (6): Will! Stop it! Get back in your cage, we haven't bought you yet!! (just for the record, we don't own a cage!).

6/20/12 - quote #2
Katie to Alex: Alex, I know that you don't like chocolate, but believe me, it won't give up on you - it will persist!

Couple of quotes from Katie today...
"Mom, other than flunking classes, I would've given anything to do summer school. That's how much I LOVE school".

6/12/12 - Maddie's quote to me this evening (while picking her up at church):
"Mom, in case you are the tooth fairy...this is how I am going to lay in bed (shows me, while standing, how she will be sleeping). My tooth will be under my pillow on the other side." Thanks kid - it makes my life a lot easier!!

a little piece of irony for the day...
I just paid the kids their allowance, in which I had to dig to find change, used my last $1 bills...5 minutes later Maddie runs in with her smile wide and a big gap between her front teeth. After working on this tooth for the last month, she chooses to lose it after I hand out my last dollar!

6/11/12 - Will's been helping me with new drawers with Matt's letterboxing closet. This is the conversation:
W: Amazing
Me: What's amazing?
W: When dad is dead, and I'm grown up...I can have his letterboxing closet!!

5/18/12 - While at Kohls this evening, Katie & I were in a dressing room. I tried on a new shirt. her response, "Oh Mom, that is definitely your style...you know, totally 1970s!".

5/9/12 - evidently the twins now know their phone number - judging from the writing on the wall (literally)...

4/29/12 - the kids are looking for a snack right now...Maddie doesn't know what to have. Will suggested some cookies. Her response, "no, I trying to find something healthy...mom, we have no healthy thing here!!"

4/22/12 - after being gone for 2 days, Katie told me the sweetest thing this morning.
Katie: "Mom, I am so glad you are home!!"
Me: "Why is that?"
Katie: "I missed you, the house just isn't the same without you!"

3/20/12 - Katie's math homework included this problem. 7n = 50 + 34. Find the answer and explain the steps to get this answer. Here's her answer...

3/19/12 - The kids were talking about the messy ice cream we had last night at McDonalds (the worker filled the cups to the top with ice cream...making it very hard to add hot fudge/caramel. It ended up melting all over and making a mess. While the kids were discussing this, I chimed in with "yeah, he was Messy Marvin"...Maddie stopped talking and looked at me in wonder, "I didn't know you knew his name, Mom!"

3/3/12 - The kids received conversation candy hearts at church tonight. Maddie ate hers after dinner. She was trying to read the first one. After figuring out that it said "kiss me", she shrugged her shoulders and kissed the candy heart...then ate it!

2/26/12 - while driving today, Will was having a "nose" issue (and using his finger rather than a tissue)...A few minutes later, this is the conversation...
Will: Mom, I am so hungry!
Alex: you shouldn't be, you just ate your snot!

1/30/12 - Will (while eating ice cream): "Ugh, brain...stop getting freezered!"

1/9/12 - Conversation last night:
Katie: "Dad, you're like Larry and Mom, you're like Bob" (from Veggie Tales).
(my thought...I think I'm offended since Bob is short and very round!)
Katie: "That's because Bob doesn't have a sense of humor...but Larry does!"
Me: "Let me remind you...without Bob running the show, all heck breaks loose!!"

12/29/13 - Leaving the house today, Matt said to me, "Young lady, where is your coat". Will said, "what? I have a coat on!". Matt repeated himself and said I wasn't talking to you, I was talking to Mom. Will then said, "What? She's not young!"

11/28/13 - While putting our Thanksgiving decorations away this afternoon, I heard Will talking to our pilgrim figure, Jack.
Will: I am sorry Jack, but you are going to spend most of your life in a box.

11/27/13 - Will & I do a race every morning to see who can get dressed first (I wake him up and then "ready, set, go" as I race back to my room to get dressed...it is a good wake up tactic!) I have YET to beat him and this morning I whined about him always winning.
Will: Well, maybe when I am a great-grandad you will win
Me: I am pretty sure I'll be dead by then!
Will: Well, there you go - you will beat me at dying!!

11/3/13 - Becki: "You can't treat your babies like that in real life." (after Maddie tossed one of her dolls)
Maddie (7): "I'm not going to get married and have babies."
Becki: "Why not?"
Maddie: "Because I don't like kissing."

10/8/13 - Needs to take a moment to share what Katie did tonight. She completed the fourth book in the Awana T&T series. What's the big deal, you ask??? She started and finished in 6 weeks! Most kids struggle to complete a book in a year! We are so proud of her and pray that God continues to use her for His glory.

12/20/13 - While playing Outburst last night, the answer was "Disney World"...with the timer beeping REALLY fast, I blurted out, "It is the place where you go to have all your dreams come true"
Alex (not missing a beat), "Heaven"!

8/15/13 - Will just walked up to me and held out his hand (holding a lightning bug). He then asked me to "watch my grandbug for a while"...

6/16/13 - So, I took 3 of the 4 kids to a gathering in Indiana from Friday to Saturday (1 night/2 days). Becki is unpacking Will's suitcase;

8 shirts
1 pair of swim trunks
1 pair of shorts
6 pair of socks + 2 socks that didn't match...
15 pair of underwear

The kicker, he slept in his clothes and didn't change the next day. Guess he prepared for the worse case scenario.

6/10/13 - I want to give a shout out to my wonderful hubby, Matt.

I can't think of a better partner to walk through life with "in sickness & in health". He woke up and prayed me through a scary night - full of pain and vomiting. He packed a full hotel room in minutes and loaded all of us into the van for a 30 minute (mountain) drive to Rapid City. He delivered me into the caring hands of nurses and doctors and then tended our 4 scared and confused children - keeping them entertained, fed and (mostly) put together! He drove 9 hours round trip to meet my mom 1/2 way so she could take the kids home. After driving those 9 hours, he ended his night at the hospital - sitting with me. He tended to me in ways I never expected and appreciate every effort he put forth. He guided my steps into the bathroom on our long drive from Rapid City to Sioux Falls - because I was to weak to stand on my own. He made me laugh when I didn't think it was possible, kept the a/c on while everyone else was freezing, and made numerous laps around the hospital corridors while I tried to gain strength. Matt, there were many more things that didn't go unnoticed...just too many to list in one post. I love you & I think we make a pretty good team, you & I. Thank you for taking such wonderful care of me this past weekend. I love you!

1/26/13 - I took Alex & Maddie to their first wedding a few weekends ago. While making dinner a few nights ago, Alex looked at me and asked, "Mom, do I have to sing to the man when I get married?" I tried to figure out why she asked that and then remembered that their only wedding experience included the bride (Tya) singing to Jason! I reassured her that no, she didn't have to sing if she didn't want to. She was pretty thrilled to hear that, "Oh, that's good. I don't like singing by myself in front of people. I didn't know if I'd ever get married then!"

10/30/14 - So, we headed to Kansas City for Fall Break this week. I gave each kid a list of what to pack and told them I wouldn't be checking - it was their responsibility to pack what I had on the list. All assured me that they got everything on the list.

First morning at the hotel, we quickly realized that Will did not pack ANY clothing - other than swimsuit and pajamas! You will notice that he is wearing the same outfit in all the pictures! Didn't seem to phase him one bit.

Cross Country – 2014 - Wilson Middle School had their sports recognition night this evening. Coach Perkins identified two "most inspirational" athletes (one boy and one girl from each class --6-8th grades) -- Kaitee was recognized as the most inspirational female athlete of her class. Not because she was the fastest runner, but because she always smiles . . . even while she runs.

7/30/14 - I love the servant's heart that my son has! He just heard the garbage truck drive by, grabbed his flip flops and ran out the door. He is now putting the garbage can away!

3/22/14 - Me: Will, can you bring the phone to me?
Will: why, who are you going to call?
Matt and me in unison: Ghostbusters!
Will: utterly confused....

1/14/14 - To my dear daughter, I know you aren't sleeping! I am currently on my Nook and keep receiving the recommendations you are sending!! Yes, her nook has been confiscated.

2/14/15 - So, another good Will story for you. While at church tonight, Will sat with Matt and me. He had never sat with us before so we showed him how to follow along and fill in the sermon notes on the outline provided in the brochure. He sat listening intently for the first 10-15 minutes then started doodling on the paper. Then, he looked at me in horror and whispered, "do we have to turn these in when we leave"? When I chuckled and responded no, he let out a huge sigh of relief!

2/12/15 - We've had issues with Will continuing to come upstairs after bedtime...finding excuses to come up to tell us something. So last night, I told him "good night Will, unless there is an emergency (our house is on fire), I don't want to see your handsome face until morning". About 30 minutes later, Will walked upstairs...with a pillow covering his face.

1/2/15 - The girls are watching The Sound of Music for the first time...they know the music but have never watched the movie. Maddie (8) just came up to me...

Maddie: I am going to sit up here with you for a few minutes. It is a slow song that I don't like.
Me: Is it Edelweiss? (singing a few notes)
Maddie: Yes, I don't like that one....
Me: Oh, that is one of my favorites because that is when the Captain and Maria realize they are in love with each other!
Maddie: WHAT?!!?!! The Captain and Maria get in love???

Obviously I have failed in telling my kids the story of the von Trapps!

Kaitee's First Formal

Wilson Middle School held their annual formal dance this past month.  When I first asked Kaitee if she wanted to attend, she wasn't sure and actually swayed towards NOT going.  I was at Kohl's a few days later and found a cute blue dress with simple lines and knew that it would be adorable on her...plus it was on clearance for $17 plus another 30%!  I went ahead and purchased it in hopes that she would change her mind.

The next day she told me that her friends were talking about the dance during lunch and most of them were going...so she decided to attend as well.  I gave her the dress later that night and it fit perfectly!

The night of the dance, I let her borrow some of my jewelry.  We curled her hair and added some makeup.  She was beautiful and so very excited to go!

I went to pick her up afterwards then took her to Village Inn for some pie.  She was bubbling with excitement the whole time we were there.  She had a wonderful time, met new friends and even danced the night away.

The first of many to come, I am sure.
