Michigan Harts

Matt & Will traveled to Michigan over Memorial Day weekend for the annual Great Lakes Letterbox Gathering.  They didn't end up spending much time at the gathering though.  They ended up spending a lot of their time with Matt's cousins on the Hart side.

Will had many "firsts" this weekend. First time kayaking, paddle boarding, on a pontoon boat, and fishing.
He was so determined to catch something. He tried and tried. Even after everyone else went inside, he forged forward. He stood out there casting. He saw fish, but they didn't seem interested in the least in the giant lure Will was offering them.
In the evening, everyone was going back out on the boat. I asked Will and he declined. I offered again and he didn't seem interested. A third time I asked him; "fine, I'll go."
We walked out and I pulled Kevin aside and whispered to him, "Will really wants to catch a fish. I haven't the slightest clue about fishing, but if you could give him some pointers I would really appreciate it."
Kevin immediately said, "He'll catch a fish. We'll make it happen." He pulled Collin aside and told him of the plan. Then informed Will that we would be going to their secret fishing spot on the lake.
Not long after Will started Kevin announced, "you got one!" I turned and saw Will in his excitment reel as fast as he could - before the fish was actaully hooked.
The fish, for its part, put on the turbo boosters to catch the shiny thing. Will brought it in all by himself . . . with the hook secured firmly into the fish's forehead.
Kim and I both took pictures. It's a seriously long story to tell of the laughs we shared trying to get the picture posted to Fb. Especially when she signed onto Fb only to see that Jackie, who wasn't even on the boat with us, had already posted the picture. What?? Shirl, her sister, sent her the picture from her phone and Jackie posted it.
Guess the Baby Boomers showed us Gen Xers how to get the job done.
Either way, here are the pictures from my phone. Thankfully I had just gotten a mini SD card for my ancient flip phone . . . made life easier getting them posted to Fb.
Matt wrote this on his Facebook wall soon after the weekend ended...
I'm so thankful that this years GLG was so close to my family. My Great Uncle Ken, isn't doing well. Cancer and a blood infection. He was given 2 weeks to live just before this weekend, and was revised today with only 5 days.
My heart wasn't into it at the gathering at all, so I left halfway through the first day and drove about 45 minutes north to visit Uncle Ken in the hospital. I was told that he had just been given some pain medication that knocked him out and he probably... wouldn't wake up for me. I was also told, due to the blood infection, that I had to gown up before entering.
He woke up when I touched his hand. He kept his eyes closed, except for when I would ask him a question, then he would open his eyes and respond and close them again.
Oh, what a blessing it was to hear his voice. He even chuckled a couple of times, only that would just cause him to go into a coughing fit.
It was a sweet time. How difficult it was to say "Goodbye" knowing that that was it . . . until we meet in Heaven.
After leaving the hospital, I cried as Will and I drove to get some dinner. Will, very empathetically, looked over to me, put his hand on my arm and said, "you can choose where we eat for dinner."
We ended up at Denny's and then went to my Cousins, the Browder's, new lake house. Will and I went out by ourselves on a paddle boat at sunset. This was a fitting way to finish out the day."

Kid's Run - year 2

The kids enjoyed running the 2015 Kid's Run so much that they kept asking when the next run would be.  This past weekend they ran in this race again. Kaitee was too old to run (but she wasn't too disappointed to be honest!).  The kids practiced running in the neighborhood a few times the week of the race.  We woke up to a beautiful day with much less humidity (than last year) and headed to the Rock Islan Army Arsenal.
The three kids ran 2 miles.  Alex finished 4th in the race - the first girl finisher!  She finished at 14:51. She was super excited because she PR'd!! (Personal Record) and kept the safety pin from the bib to place on her shoe (something she picked up from her XC coach).
Maddie & Will both finished in the top 15, running 18:21 and 17:46 respectively.  All 3 had great times and continue to run well!
We are very proud of all of them for giving up their Saturday morning to participate in this run.

Goodbye Wilson Wildcats, Hello Moline Maroons!

We survived Wilson Middle School with our first kid.  Actually "survived" is a harsh word, making it sound like it was hard, not pleasant.  That's actually the furthest thing from the truth! We have only good things to say about Wilson.  The admin and teaching staff are amazing - the love that they have for this age group is very apparent.   It was hard to say goodbye on Kaitee's behalf.  She was very excited to track down all of her favorite teachers - mentors who have poured in to her over the past 3 years.

Here is Kaitee receiving her recognition certificate and Wilson pin - given to her by her English Language Arts (ELA) teacher.  The picture is a bit blurry, but I love the expression and excitement that Mrs. Curnyn is showing Kaitee.  She signed Kaitee's yearbook "...I get a copy of your 1st published book someday. I was blessed to have you in class." She continually told me how impressed she was with Kaitee's writing - that she always loved reading what Kaitee turned in.
It got super crazy after the ceremony and we had a hard time tracking down her friends for pictures, so we tried again the next day (the last day of school).
Kaitee says goodbye to Wilson to looks ahead to Moline High School next August. I can't believe our baby is heading into 9th grade.

Freeport 2016

Our 18th Annual Trip to Freeport!  Hard to believe that we have been doing this for so many years.  I look back over the pictures from the past 18 years and can't believe how our family has changed and grown.  We love this city and have so much fun every time we go!

This year, we drove through Polo on the way to Freeport.  The kids loved the fact that the school mascot/students are known as the Marcos!  They got out and played Marco Polo for a bit!
We also enjoyed this beautiful piece of art at the cemetery just outside of town.
Playing and enjoying the beautiful day at Krape Park...
We set up an obstacle course around the play area...Alex won both times!  Kids really enjoyed mapping out the course and trying to beat each other.
We left the park and drove to Union Dairy for super yummy ice cream! (along with most of the city of Freeport!)
Another tradition - picture on the Lincoln/Douglas Debate Square Statue. Can you believe how much they have grown!!
We ended our day by heading East to Rockford for a few letterboxes and dinner before heading home.
