Another trip to Galena
Once again, we woke up to a beautiful Saturday and knew that we couldn't stay home. We quickly decided to head up north to Mt Carroll, IL - there were 5 boxes in the area and they were all quick & kid friendly. Garfan did a great job with her carvings and we even got to visit with her a bit. We then headed to Woodbine & Elizabeth to find 4 other boxes. Once again, they were all pretty quick boxes with great carvings from WyndRyders, Highlanders and River Rat. The kids were holding up pretty good...aside from "is it snack time yet..." so we decided to finish our day in Galena. When we went with friends last weekend, we didn't want to have the whole day be about letterboxing, so we had 2 boxes left to find - one in the Eagle Ridge, Galena Territory and one at Grant's Home. Both boxes were beautiful and quick finds...minus the one in Galena Territory which Matt & Katie went to find. We had a harder time locating the road (even with a map!) than the box. The Carols & Highlander were the placers for the last two. All in all, we ended up with 11 boxes! Notice the "X" that marked the spot for the "Circle of Friends".
An interesting side note from Mt Carroll - "The Grand Bell Tower" was located on a campus in the middle of town. It was the former campus of Shimer College, which is where Matt's brother John went to college in Waukegan, IL. While at this box, we went to retrieve the box and ended up stirring a bee's nest. Needless to say, the kids and I high-tailed it to the van while Matt logged in. It wasn't a fun way to start our boxing, but things got better as we went.
We had a fun time visiting "Apple River Fort" in Elizabeth, IL. We got some pictures of the fort and tried to educate the kids of times long gone. They enjoyed climbing the ladder (except Maddie!) and standing at the lookout post.

This Little Piggy...
Okay, I am going to share something and I know that in the process I am going to open up a can of worms (between Matt & myself). That said, here is the story.
Today, Katie & Alex came upstairs and asked if they could watch a video that has lots of nursery rhymes. I told them that they could watch it. After watching it, Alex came running up and told me about the nursery rhyme that shows our toes. I asked her which one it was and she told me, "you know, the one that says 'this little piggy went to Target, this little piggy stayed home, this little piggy went shopping, this little piggy didn't, this little piggy cried all the way home'". I couldn't stop laughing - I guess I would cry too if everyone else was shopping at Target. What is amazing is that we really don't shop much as a family, so I am surprised that she came up with that story...however, I can see where she got Target from Market and than went on with the shopping theme. Pretty cute.
That story aside...Matt & I have always had a debate. Matt says that the little piggy game starts on the little toe and ends on the big toe...but I keep telling him that isn't right, you start with the big and end with the little. Which way do you play?

Lazy Day on the River
After months of talking about it, Andrew (my co-worker) and I finally got together to go canoeing.
We met at Harold's Landing in Moline, and quickly realized how high and fast the river was. Katie was so excited that she already had her life jacket on. She just didn't understand why she had to take it off so quickly.
Not knowing if we would be able to paddle up river, we decided to drive down to the Back Water Gamblers site and leave a vehicle. After dropping off the van, asking Katie to take her life jacket off again, and climbing into Andrew's truck we headed back to Harold's Landing.
On the drive back to the start, Andrew was talking to me, I was listening in on Katie and Collins conversation, it went something like this;
Collin, "What if your van gets broken into?"
Katie, "It wont, its locked."
"They can break in the windows."
"No, the windows are strong."
"Well, they can break in the doors."
Some how this transitioned into "gluing the metal doors back together."
Ah, here we are!! "Katie, got your life jacket? Oh, you already have it on . . . never mind."
I snapped this one photo just before launch, and decided to leave the camera behind (just in case). We hit the river and decided to try going up river to see if it were possible.
BTW, the kids were thrilled to see that our van had not been broken into while we were gone.

After paddling hard for a minute, focused on the river ahead, Andrew told me to stop. We looked to the side and realized we were moving backwards and gaining speed.
After turning around we had a nice lazy time on the Rock River.
It was a beautiful day and we all enjoyed out ride on the river. Andrew and I are already talking of the next time we can push off.

Katie's First Tooth
Katie's front tooth became loose last weekend. Matt, Alex & her were playing "Rough House Game" when her tooth became lose. That was the first that she realized it. Katie & Grammy worked at getting it out tonight and to say that she is excited and proud is an understatement. She couldn't wait to get to bed so that the tooth fairy could visit. I pulled out my old tooth fairy pillow from the cedar chest and we put her tooth in it.

My baby is growing up too fast...

Adults Only Outing
We headed to Galena, IL today to enjoy some wonderful food, fun shopping and letterboxing - all of this with wonderful friends. We stopped at our favorite for lunch - Vinny Vinuchi's. We were so lucky to get "our tables" - in the "love dungeon"! Here we are waiting for our lunch and enjoying each other's company...
We walked around town a bit. Of course, we had to stop for coffee & chocolate! Matt was happy to find a few new letterboxes in town (3 for 4 on the day...we ran out of time to find the new one at Grant's home) and also replace some of the old missing boxes of his.
To the Wilsons & Welshs, thank you for being such wonderful friends. Thanks for agreeing to the Alpine Slide! We love you guys and pray that you continue to be a part of our lives for years to come.
Our last stop on the day was at Chestnut Mountain Ski Resort. There is a letterbox at the base of the Alpine slide...which none of us had ever done. Let me say that while it was fun, I SUCKED! I would love to do it again some day and hopefully go a bit faster!

Of things to Come
I loved how this picture turned out. I am selling this veil and wanted pictures of it to include with the description (this is the one I didn't wear at the wedding). I asked Katie to be my model and here is a favorite.
The Joy of Motherhood with 2 Toddlers
This is what happens when I think that I may have a quiet afternoon. I was downstairs for no longer than 3-4 minutes helping Katie & Alex hang up their dresses. I came back upstairs to find Maddie & Will in the middle of this...
Of course, when I went downstairs, I left Maddie & Will playing happily in the front room with all of their Little People toys. The bathroom door was shut...which usually is a deterrent. Evidently it wasn't today!
I was heading back upstairs to put them down for their nap...relief is in sight!...I came up the stairs and heard the water running...THIS CAN'T BE GOOD!!!...I guess my new library book will have to wait. God is stretching me, right???
Take special notice of the toilet paper all over the floor...on the shower curtain...toilet paper roll empty...water ALL over! Now, instead of curling up with my new book during naptime, I now get to clean the bathroom and do a load of laundry with the dirty rags! Oh well, I am sure the book isn't that good anyway!

Grass Bug
The kids found this cool little bug tonight.

We were supposed to have the girls second night of Awana tonight. We found out, as we were driving there, that the church (and the whole neighborhood) didn't have electricity. So, we ended up running errands. Here are the girls "dancing" with their Awana vests.
Art by Maddie
This is what I discovered after naptime a few days ago. Maddie must have hidden a pencil at some point in the day. Luckily it was pencil & not pen! I tried to darken the picture a bit so you could see it better. I think you get the idea though!

Rockford
It has been a very busy, exhausting week...so instead of taking Sunday to rest and catch up on things around the house, we decided to head to Rockford to do some boxing. What a beautiful day we ended up with! 74 degrees & sunny. It actually started to rain as we were driving back into the Quad Cities late last night. It doesn't get much better than that!

We were fortunate with some family friendly boxes. When Matt & I went there last April for our anniversary, we tried to get a lot of the hiking boxes. Due to the flooding and raining that weekend, we were very limited. Matt loved seeing that there were new boxes planted also, so we had a lot to choose from!

The big thing that we loved about this weekend is that Will & Maddie walked 2 of the trails! We have always taken the stroller with us or I have stayed behind with the twins while Matt & the girls went on the trail. We are very excited about this. We could tell that Maddie & Will were excited too and loved being able to get out and walk/run/skip (in Maddie's case!).

Friday & Saturday we held our neighborhood garage sale. It feels great to have that done. Now I am catching up on emails, laundry, bills, etc since I haven't done any of my daily work for 4 days!
We were able to nab these boxes:
"The Turkey Festival " by P.Granola
"Peace Plaza" by CraftyOnes

"4-H Letterbox" by River Rat
"Shimmy for a Cure" by RaqsEnigma

Peoria Letterboxing
The girls sitting in front of Mrs. Bradley at Bradley University
The Sentinel - a Giant Burr Oak older than 500 years!
Alex standing by some Heart leaves at Bradley University.
This is the bridge we took to get to "River City" Letterbox - it was like the initial hill on a roller coaster! Wow!!!
School Days
Today was the first day of 4 year preschool. Alex was pretty excited. Her & Katie had a blast at Awana last night...they definitely missed it over the summer. Katie will be starting Full Blast tonight at Harvest. We will see how the schedule holds out - it may be too much for them. Katie also started "1st grade" this week. I say that loosely as the curriculum that we use is very flexible and doesn't really have a grade system to it.

Here are their "First Day" Pictures.
Hush Puppy
While eating a hush puppy from Long John Silvers last week, Katie told us that whenever Puppy (her future husband) is talking too much/too loud, she will say "HUSH PUPPY"!
